Vote for aspirant of your choice, says Iyaloja

Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo Iyaloja-General of Nigeria

The Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Chief Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, has urged voters in tomorrow’s All Progressives Congress to go for aspirants of their choice. The primary election of the governorship candidate for the party will hold in all the 241 wards in Lagos state.

As is now very well known, two candidates, incumbent governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Babajide Olusola Sanwo Olu, will become APC’s choice for the number one seat and position in the state. It is fait accompli that whoever the party endorses will become the head of a state that is richer than some states combined in Nigeria and, also, more problematic to govern.

Even so, the election of either aspirant is expected to be a tough one tomorrow. For the first time since civilian rule in 1999, a sitting governor is doing all he can to remain in power. It has not always been so. The former civilian governor of the state and National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, spent two four-year terms. His successor, Babatunde Fashola, also ruled for eight years.

To some keen watchers of the unfolding political event in the state, that Ambode is now at his wits trying to hold on to a second tenure is something of a surprise. It should have come naturally. But, in politics as it sometimes is in real life, things take a different turn, different from the normal expectation.

Only last week, one of the aspirants, Sanwo Olu paid a courtesy call at Iyaloja’s residence at 10, Sunday Adigun Street, Alausa. A freshman coming into political battle with a sitting governor, Sanwo Olu has the backing of the political heavies in his party. The timely visit, therefore, was seen by many as automatic endorsement by an influential member of the party.

But information reaching us this evening shows that Folashade-Ojo has not, by her action, endorsed the visiting contender. “I am a mother to the two aspirants. I have not endorsed one over the other,” Folashade-Ojo said through her PA, Bisola Omisore, just this evening to Lagos Panorama.

“As the Iyaloja, I do get visits from political office seekers for obvious reasons. I have had visits like that from politicians in the past. I will get more in the future as the Iyaloja. The thing is that whoever comes will be given the appropriate reception,” Omisore quoted his principal as saying.

It is in that light that Iyaloja is now telling voters to go for the aspirant of their choice, “the aspirant you think means well for the state.”
