Today provided another opportunity for our dear Lagos State House of Assembly under the able the leadership of Rt. Hon. Dr. Mudashiru Obasa to live up to its mantra: “Above the Common Standards of Excellence”.

At plenary Thursday (26th March,) A Bill for a Law to Combat and Stop the Spread of the Corona Virus Pandemic in Lagos State and for connected purposes passed the 1st, 2nd and 3rd reading. This historic Bill was proposed by the Rt. Honourable Speaker.

Specifically and among other things, The bill empowers the Governor of Lagos State to:

1. Set up and Spend Contingency Funds to the tune of N20bn and to create Corona Virus Pandemic Trust Fund where donations and private support can be channelled to.

2. Implement Policies and Pronouncements, Enforce and implement the Law, have power to arrest and put on trial in the court of law.

3. Evaluate and issue quarantine orders; Enforce compulsory medical treatment; Give closure order on properties. The law also supports volunteers from retired Medical Practitioners, among other benefits.

In the course of discussions over the bill today, I made it clear,

*That it was important to alleviate the impact of the virus on the economy of Lagos, especially since the Bill would enable the executive to expend necessary Funds to contain the virus by providing adequate facilities in the state owned hospitals*.

On behalf of the people of Ikeja Constituency 2, I want to specially commend our Governor, Mr. Babjide Sanwoolu and his team for rising valiantly to this occasion and for doing a good job so far on the prevention and Containment of COVID-19 in our state.
Hopefully we shall soon see the end of this.
